Review: Shakespeare's Head

The Shakespeare's Head pub is a lovely little pub nestled in a corner up in Seven Dials, with a roaring fire on a chilly evening and a nice little patio out front for if the weather EVER gets hot again. As we are currently stuck in what feels like months of drizzle, I haven't had the chance to try the beer garden yet but as soon as there's a hint of sun, I'll be there. Can't beat a drink in the sun eh?

A week or so ago, we were looking for somewhere casual for some tasty food and the Shakespeare's Head immediately sprung to mind. (Partly because it's on the way to the station, which is where we were heading anyway). But ALSO because we remembered the huuuuge bangers and mash menu they have there. If you don't already know, they pretty much exclusively do sausages, mash and gravy, but don't be fooled - there are still some tricky decisions to be made menu-wise. For example, how are you supposed to choose between cheesy mash and garlicky mash?!
This is my favourite thing about the food here - the meal on offer is so simple but the options you have to choose from make it so much more exciting. Don't fancy pork? Have lamb or veggie! Allergic to chives? Order a different mash! Gone off onion?! ... anyway you get the idea. I went for Pork & Leek sausages, Crispy Bacon & Garlic mash and Red Onion Marmalade gravy. My boyfriend got the same gravy but with Lamb & Rosemary sausages and Cheddar & Stilton mash. We had a battle of rock paper scissors about who was going to get to order the Cheddar & Stilton (we wanted to try both) and I lost... my unhappiness was only compounded by his exclamation that it was the 'BEST MASH EVER'. Needless to say, a lot of it ended up on my plate...

Having had my moan, I have to say that my mash was also good. In fact, everything was great. And the portion sizes were MASSIVE - three sausages, greens, a huge dollop of mash and all of this in a bowlful of gravy. I love the idea of doing one thing really well, and that's exactly what they've managed to do here. Long live good old bangers and mash!
